Acid free - All of our mount boards are acid free. This makes them suitable for conservation framing.
Acid corrosion - In the old days picture framers used to use materials which could end up doing more good than bad to your pictures. When you consider the main purpose of a picture frame is preserve and protect this isn't very good! Picture-Frames.co.uk does not use lower quality materials like these.
Acrylic Glazing - As standard, all of our frames come with this form of glazing. It has all the advantages of glass but does not shatter of break as easy.
Aluminium Picture Frame - A picture frame made from the material aluminium (metal).
Artwork - A general term used to describe photographs, drawings, paintings hand lettering and the like prepared to use in printed matter.
Bevelled Edge - Usually used in reference to the inner edge of a mount, it has a 45° slant and can come in two colours. White or black.
Blackcore - A type of mountboard, when cut has a black bevelled, inside edge.
Backing Board - When we refer to backing board on this website we mean a 2mm MDF board which forms the back of your picture frame.
Barrier Board - A type of conservation board which slots into the back of the frame to protect the item inside.
Box Frame - Box frames are made to accommodate 3d items, we do not sell box frames but more often than not a deep rebated picture frame moulding will suffice.
Canvas - A piece of strong cloth of which the surface has been prepared to receive painting, commonly painting in oil.
Chop Service - A method we use for providing over sized frames which allows us to buy in mouldings chopped to specified lengths.
Conservation Framing - The act of preserving, guarding, or protecting the item in a safe or entire state within a picture frame.

Mount - A piece of material with an aperture to allow the artwork to be seen through the middle. Can come in various styles including double, single and v-groove.

Mount Board - The material used to mount an item. Can vary in quality; museum, conservation, white core, cream core.
Moulding - The material used for the picture frame its self. This can be wood or aluminium. We do not use cheap plastic mouldings.
Oil Painting - The art or practice of painting with oils.

Ornate/Traditional - A description of a picture frame which is old and detailed in appearance.
Profile - The curves and design of a frame. A picture frame's profile includes the height, width and rebate (channel on the frame's underside in which the materials sit), and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Rebate - The lip/depth of the picture frame in mm.
Restoration - The process of replenishing the look, feel and character of a distressed item.

Spacers - A product used to give the illusion that the item is sitting away from the front of the frame.
Strut Backs - The boards which have a tail to allow for desk standing picture frames. Made from an MDF.
Tapes - Archival and standard tapes are sold on this website, allowing you to secure the item once in the picture frame so that dust and the elements can not reach precious items.
